J.S.S. COLLEGE is situated in a picturesque surrounding on the top of the Mailarlinga Hill, now called Vidyagiri, at a height of 2511 feet above the sea level, on the outskirts of Dharwad, on Poona-Bangalore Highway . It is ideally located for all round development of the students. The temple Lord Mailarlinga on top of Vidyagiri hill top one can get a panoramic view of the surrounding.

Janata Shikshana Samiti has network of educational and Nation-Building Institutions on the Vidyagiri Campus, like Arts, Commerce and Science College, Polytechnic Institute, Lower and Higher Secondary Schools, Economics Research Institute and Law College at Hubli etc.

The Samiti has forty quarters on the campus for its employees. There are two Boys Hostels, two Ladies Hostels & a Working Women's Hostel. It has also a Bank Branch, Post-Office, well equipped Library housed in the spacious building. Spacious playground is available on the campus for the conduct of various types of games and sports. The open Air Theatre has provided extensive opportunities for cultural activities of varied dimensions.

The J.S.S. Banashankari Arts, Commerce and Shantikumar Gubbi Science College , was originally started in 1944 by the Karnataka Education Board with a mere strength of forty students. It was taken over by Late Shri. R. S. Hukkerikar the veteran freedom fighter, constructive worker and educationist, in 1952. the college was originally started as an intermediate college but Science wing was added in the year 1949.

With the increasing students strength, the college was bifurcated into two separate colleges, the Banashankari Arts College and S.K. Gbbi Science College in 1966. However the two colleges were once again amalgamated in June, 1975.

After taking over the management of Janata Shikshana Samiti on 18 th October, 1973 by Pujya Vishweshteertha Sripadangalavaru of Pejavarmath and Pujya Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala, the new management added two years P.U.C. Job Oriented Diploma Course, B.Com. Degree course, B.Sc. (Electronics), B.Sc., B.A., BBA, BCA, M.Sc (Computer Science, B.Sc, Bio-Technology) and B.Sc. (Micro-Biology) to the college in the year 1975, 1977, 1991, 1996, 1999, 2003 and 2006 respectively.

The College is permanently affiliated to Karnatak University and teaches the course leading to B.A. degree with Kannada, Sanskrit, English, Economics, Sociology, Political Science, History Geography, Hindi and Education as optional subjects. It has a Commerce wing and at the Science side the college provides B.Sc. degree course with Chemistry, Physics, Botany, Zoology, Statistics, Electronics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Bio-Technology and Microbiology as optional subjects. The college has professional courses like, BBA, BCA and M.Sc. (computer Science)

The college had the good fortune of possessing a galaxy of eminent educationists as Principals. The includes such illustrious names as Prof. B. M. Shrikanthaiah, the poet and freedom fighter, Prof. G. B. Jathar the economist, Dr. Karmchanda Wade, Dr. R. Y. Dharwadkar, the writer and educationist, Dr. V. G. Kulkarni a great orator and Scientist, Prof. N. Vajrakumar who represents the J.S.S. Institutions on Governing Body as our Secretary. He has been ably conducting the affairs of the Samiti with zeal and dedication. Prof. V. G. Gokhale, Dr. S. N. Ashtaputre, Dr. D. V. Sanjeev Rao, Dr. H. A. Jahagirdar and Prof. Usha Anandarayanavar served as Principals. Dr. Ajith Prasad is the present principal of the college.

To assist poor students the institution carried out several experiments including earn while you learn programme, besides having a very well equipped library, the college has two NCC battalions, two units of NSS and a Student Welfare Unit. The students of the college are awarded with various types of Scholarships including studentship, fee concession from government, various concessions under government schemes and several other prizes instituted by the college and benevolent donors. The management of Janata Shikshana Samiti has been kind enough to institute 57 Scholarships to encourage meritorious students and Sportsmen. The college, which celebrated Golden Jubilee recently, stands for the promotion and preservation of academic and cultural excellence. The university and PU Board Examination results, year after year, have placed this college in a prominent position J.S.S. College is accredited with ‘A' grade by the NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council).
